Caring for Silver Jewelry: How to Keep It Beautiful for Years to Come

Silver jewelry tarnishes. That's normal, not a sign of poor quality – and it can be reversed with a few simple steps.

925 sterling silver reacts with sulfur compounds in the air and in cosmetic products. The result is a thin, usually grayish to slightly bluish layer on the surface. Important to know: this is purely a surface reaction, not a material flaw – the silver underneath stays fully intact.

The simplest care: proper storage

The most effective protection starts before tarnishing even happens:

• Store silver jewelry separately or in a fabric pouch, not lying out in the open
• Avoid contact with perfume, lotions, and hairspray – ideally, put jewelry on after your skincare routine, not before
• Take off silver jewelry when showering, swimming, or exercising
• Store in a dry place – moisture speeds up tarnishing

How to gently clean tarnished silver

For everyday tarnish: a soft polishing cloth

A dedicated silver polishing cloth (without harsh chemicals) is usually enough for light tarnishing. Simply rub gently over the surface until the shine returns.

For heavier tarnishing: a mild soap solution

Soak briefly in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, clean gently with a soft cloth or soft toothbrush, rinse thoroughly, and dry immediately.

What to avoid

Toothpaste, baking soda, or home remedies with abrasive particles can damage the surface of fine engravings and hammered textures – we don't recommend these for handcrafted jewelry with intentionally irregular surfaces.

Special care for natural material combinations

If your piece also features wood, shell, or turquoise, only clean the silver element – natural materials don't handle water or polish well and are best wiped dry only.

Not every discoloration needs to be removed. Many of our customers love the subtle patina that forms in hammered or textured areas – it highlights the handwork and the irregularities that make every piece unique. You decide whether you want your jewelry high-polish or with visible aging – both are right.
